Trauma Therapy in Thousand Oaks, CA

Trauma Therapy in Thousand Oaks with Julie Klamon, LMFT

Julie Klamon LMFT, trauma therapist serving Thousand Oaks, CA

Trauma changes the way you experience the world. It can make ordinary situations feel threatening, leave you on edge for no apparent reason, or cause you to shut down emotionally. These responses made sense at the time of the event, but when they keep showing up long after the danger has passed, they start to get in the way of your life.

With more than two decades as a licensed marriage and family therapist, I bring deep experience to this work. Over a decade of my career was spent at a Los Angeles agency supporting children recovering from sexual trauma. I am also a certified counselor through the UCLA Rape Treatment Center. That background gives me a solid foundation for helping people of all ages process difficult experiences and reclaim a sense of safety.

My office in Agoura Hills is about 15 minutes from Thousand Oaks via the 101 freeway. Trauma therapy in Thousand Oaks does not have to feel intimidating. We go at your pace, and nothing happens in session that you are not ready for.

Trauma and the Thousand Oaks Community

Thousand Oaks is a resilient community, but resilience does not mean the hard things disappear. The Borderline Bar and Grill shooting in November 2018 took twelve lives and shattered a sense of safety that many residents had taken for granted. Just days later, the Woolsey Fire forced mass evacuations and destroyed homes across the Conejo Valley. For a lot of people, those events created layers of trauma that still show up in unexpected ways: a startle response to loud sounds, difficulty being in crowded spaces, trouble sleeping through the night.

Beyond those community-wide events, individual trauma is just as real. Accidents on the 101, domestic violence behind closed doors, childhood abuse that went unaddressed for years, the sudden loss of someone close. These experiences deserve careful attention. Whether your trauma is recent or something you have carried for a long time, therapy can help you process it without being overwhelmed by it.

How I Work with Trauma

Trauma therapy is not about reliving your worst moments. It is about understanding how those moments still affect you and gradually reducing their hold. We work on calming your nervous system, making sense of what happened, and rebuilding the parts of your life that trauma disrupted. Some clients need help with specific symptoms like flashbacks or hypervigilance. Others are dealing with a more general sense of disconnection or numbness.

You can learn more on my Trauma Therapy page. What I want you to know is that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It takes real courage to face something painful, and I take that seriously in every session.

What Your First Session Looks Like

The first session is about getting comfortable. I want to understand what brought you in, but there is no pressure to share details of your trauma right away. We spend time talking about what your life looks like now, what symptoms are bothering you most, and what you are hoping to get out of therapy. I also answer any questions you have about how the process works. Think of it as a conversation, not an evaluation. My goal is for you to leave that first meeting feeling like this is a place where you can do this work at your own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trauma Therapy in Thousand Oaks

What types of trauma do you treat at your office near Thousand Oaks?

I work with clients who have experienced a wide range of traumatic events, including accidents, assault, domestic violence, childhood abuse, community violence, natural disasters, sudden loss, and medical trauma. I also support people dealing with the long-term effects of the 2018 Borderline Bar shooting and Woolsey Fire.

How does trauma therapy in Thousand Oaks work with you?

We begin at a pace that feels right for you. The first sessions focus on building trust and understanding your experience. From there, we work together on processing what happened and reducing symptoms like flashbacks, hypervigilance, and emotional numbness. Sessions are held at my Agoura Hills office.

What are your qualifications for trauma therapy?

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT #37704) with more than two decades of clinical experience. I spent more than a decade at a Los Angeles agency supporting children recovering from sexual trauma, and I am a certified counselor through the UCLA Rape Treatment Center.

Can children and teens receive trauma therapy with you?

Yes. I work with children ages 8 and up and teenagers who have been affected by traumatic events. Young people process trauma differently than adults, and I adjust my methods to meet them where they are developmentally.

Do you offer virtual trauma therapy for Thousand Oaks residents?

Yes, I offer secure virtual sessions for anyone in California. Some clients prefer to begin with virtual sessions before transitioning to in-person work, and that is completely fine.

How do I know if what I experienced counts as trauma?

Trauma is not defined by the event alone but by how it affected you. If an experience left you with lasting distress, avoidance, nightmares, emotional numbness, or difficulty trusting others, it may be worth exploring in therapy. You do not need a formal diagnosis to reach out for trauma therapy near Thousand Oaks.
