Depression Therapy in Porter Ranch

Depression Therapy in Porter Ranch with Julie Klamon, LMFT

Woman experiencing depression before starting depression therapy near Porter Ranch

Depression does not always look like sadness. Often it looks like going through the motions. You get the kids to school, answer the emails, show up where you are supposed to be, and feel almost nothing underneath it. The things that used to matter feel flat. Sleep is either too much or never enough. For a lot of people in Porter Ranch, life looks fine from the outside, which can make depression even harder to name and harder to admit.

I have practiced as a licensed marriage and family therapist for more than 20 years, and I have worked with many people who could not point to a single reason they felt this way. Depression does not always need a reason. It is a condition, not a character flaw, and it responds to the right kind of support. The goal of our work is to help you feel like yourself again, not to talk you into being grateful for what you have.

My office is in Agoura Hills, about 35 to 40 minutes from Porter Ranch by way of the 118 and the 101. In-person sessions are available there, and virtual sessions are also available across California.

When Low Mood Becomes Depression

Everyone has stretches of feeling down. Depression is different. It settles in and stays, usually for weeks or longer, and it starts to take things from you: your energy, your interest in things you used to enjoy, your ability to concentrate, your sense that the future holds anything good. You might notice changes in appetite or sleep, a heaviness that does not lift, or a quiet voice telling you that nothing you do matters. If any of that sounds familiar, you are not weak and you are not failing. You are dealing with something real, and it is treatable.

If you are having thoughts of death or suicide, please do not wait. You can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline any time. When you are ready, I am here to help with the longer work of recovery.

Depression Therapy for the Porter Ranch Community

Porter Ranch is a community of newer homes and busy, accomplished families. There is a quiet expectation here that you keep up, that you have it together, that the nice house and the full calendar add up to a good life. Most of the time they do. But that expectation can make depression feel like something to hide. People tell me they feel guilty for struggling when, on paper, everything is going well. That guilt does not help. It just keeps people isolated and silent.

Depression also touches every stage of life here. New parents running on no sleep. Professionals who feel empty despite real success. Teenagers carrying academic pressure who have stopped doing the things they once loved. Older adults facing loss and change. Whatever your situation, you do not have to perform your way through it. Therapy is a place to be honest about how you actually feel.

How I Approach Depression Therapy

We begin by understanding what is driving the depression, whether that is a specific loss or transition, a long-standing pattern, or something with no clear cause at all. From there we build a plan to rebuild energy, motivation, and connection. Depending on what fits you, that may include talk therapy, behavioral activation to get you moving again in small, doable steps, and practical coping strategies for the hardest parts of the day. You can read more about my general approach on my depression therapy page.

Depression lies to you. It tells you nothing will help and you should not bother trying. Part of my job is to hold the realistic view when you cannot, and to help you take the small steps that gradually move the needle. Most people start to feel some shift before they expect to.

Yes. I work with children ages eight and up, teens, and adults. In young people depression often shows up as irritability or withdrawal rather than obvious sadness, so I tailor the work to each age and involve parents when that helps.

Yes. This is common among the people I see from Porter Ranch. Depression does not require an obvious external reason, and a comfortable life does not protect anyone from it. If you feel flat, disconnected, or unable to enjoy things despite circumstances that look good, that is a valid reason to start therapy.

My Agoura Hills office is about 35 to 40 minutes from Porter Ranch via the 118 and the 101. In-person appointments are available there, and virtual sessions across California are also an option.

It varies from person to person, but many people notice small shifts within the first several weeks as we get you moving again and identify what is feeding the depression. Recovery is rarely a straight line, and I will help you track real progress even on the days it does not feel like much is changing.
